Some Basic Glossary to be learnt before starting the work

  • Sluice – A sliding gate or other device for controlling the flow of water, especially one in a lock gate.
  • Anaicut – A small reservoir bed level dam constructed across the river for storing runoff.
  • Aquifer – Ground water bearing formation.
  • Arangani – Dead storage of the tank, deeper than foreshore area, where water stored for social purposes like drinking, washing clothes, cattle bathing and fish culture.
  • Collector Drain – The natural drainage course from the catchment.
  • Commune – Cluster of villages.
  • Caisses Communes – The arête of 18th July, 1859 brought into existence the institutions known as Caisses Commune (Common Funds) similar to France.
  • Encroachment – illegal acquisition of the public property land / intrude on others property.
  • Eri – Tank / Lake – A surface rain water storage body used for minor irrigation and infiltration.
  • Eri Variya Perumakkal – Even in the 10th Century there was a council of elders known as Eri Varya Perumakkal, whose responsibility was to look after the maintenance of tanks and proper distribution of water equitably among the ayacutdars.
  • Feeder Channel / Canal – Carries water into the tank from the river or streams, dams and from the catchment area.
  • Kudimaramathu – An ancient customary system of tank operation and maintenance followed.
  • Kulam – Pond.
  • Madhagu – Sluice a regulator structure of a tank that supplies water for irrigation.
  • Masi Magam – A temple cum water resource festival celebrated during the month of February –March.
  • Neerkatti – A professional / traditional water distributor of irrigation to the command area of a tank.
  • Non-Ayacut – Official registered non command area of irrigation tank (mostly dry lands).
  • Non-System Tank – Tank fed by rainfall and runoff from its own catchment area.
  • Patta – Ownership title for a land given to poor people by the government.
  • Picoa @ Yeatram – Conventional (semi mechanized) system of irrigation using manual and cattle power lifting.
  • Psici Culture – Fish culture.
  • Supply Channel – Either earthen or lined channel carries irrigation water from the tank sluice to the field.
  • Surplus Course – Carries surplus water pass on through weirs of tanks and feeds either the lower tank or river.
  • System Tank – Tank fed by the river / anaicut / reservoir / diversion structures through feeder channel.
  • Thangal – A captive small size surface water body attached to main tank that receives drainage.
  • Vaickal – A common term called for feeder / supply / drainage water channel.
  • Water Spread Area (WSA) – Area of submergence in the tank at its maximum water level.
  • Weir – A structure which escapes the surplus water from the tank at Full Tank Level.
